Yesterday I started to remove the paint from the top of the bureau. Eva-Marie had called me back after I sent her the photo, and said she'd check it out for me. She called the manufacturer of the paint, and asked questions such as (1) did you leave the drawers in? No (2) is there a knot in the wood? No. (3) is the humidity above 70%? No, we have the dehumidifier going in the basement at 60%. (3) Did I wash the top with water? No. So what in the world is causing this? The recommendation? Sand it down to the wood. Apply an oil-based base sealer coat on it (Eva-Marie's personal favorite is Zinsser, but we have some Kilz so I will use that). So, Jay gave me one of his lighter sanders to use to remove the paint. Well that was not easy. I sanded and sanded, but there were so many layers that it was taking forever, so I went out and asked Jay if I could use his super-duper, heavy sander. He said, "I'll do it. If I let you do it, you'll sand the whole top off with this." Hahahaha! So he sanded the top for me. It was quite a bit of work, but he got down to the wood.
There were so many layers. I counted about six. But Jay finally got down to the bare surface:
We were busy the rest of the day, so I wasn't able to paint the top. I'll do it on Monday when I get home from work.
So...we ended up spending way too much time doing errands. Errands always take so much longer than what you'd expect. I had to pick up liquor boxes at the liquor store because when Sofia moved out, she left two bookshelves along with piles of books downstairs with the promise that she'd take care of cleaning them up. Well, I think it's been three to four months since she moved into her own apartment, and they're still sitting there. I'm getting tired of looking at them and walking around them, so Jay and I packed them up and moved everything out to the pod. I did a little cleaning. It was so hot and humid. Sweat was dripping off my face and down my back. Everything you wear gets soaking wet in this weather. We've never had to keep the air conditioner on in our bedroom for so many days and so early in the summer during normal summers. It's usually a week or so in August and that's it. The nights are always cooler and bearable, but not this year.
We had company for dinner...a young couple and the sister missionaries. We had hot dogs and hamburgers (we tried these sesame seed rolls that I had not bought in the past, and they were absolutely DELICIOUS! Thanks, Jay, for picking them off the shelf!). I had made a macaroni salad (part for Peter to take to this beach party he was going to and part for us tonight), a vegi platter, fruit salad, corn on the cob, chips...I think that's it. It was an easy dinner to prepare and was good. We had a great time.
It was a good day.
